This was obviously a very old camel, tied up in the pen with his owner's tent (who you can just barely see in the shadows).

I tremble to think how may kneels and rises he has made to wear his knees that badly...deserves to go to a camel equivalent of 'out to grass'

When I see an animal hobbled like this I find it not hard at all to understand why he might be obstreperous.
