Keukenhof: windmill workings

Shot from a very bizarre angle so somewhat distorted, but the long beams are used to rotate the top of the mill for the best wind positioning (see Patrick's explanation below). The operator was working a gear mechanism with a metal cable that made a lot of noise.

interesting....must be some reason they didn't use the English system of a tail wheel to keep the to pinto the wind and control it

A very interesting POV, showing a lot of important parts of the mill. You are right about the structure used to turn the head of the mill in the wind. Because it is to heave for a person to do this, there is a winch system with cable, chain or rope to do the job. They put these around a small pole set clockwise around the mill. With the winch they pull the construction towards this little pole. Hope it is not to complicated.

A terrific view of the rotating mechanism, Helen. Who needs motors? Very well composed with the rope coming down left and the blade going up on the right - great diagonals! And the image below with tulips is wonderful! V.
