The heart of old Kraków at dusk. This square is the largest in Europe; what you see is only half of it as it extends an equal distance behind the Cloth Hall.
The Cloth Hall, sitting in the very center of Market Square, was originally a covered market, and a stone structure serving that purpose is thought to have existed here at the time of Kazimierz the Great (14th century). It was rebuilt in 1585 and remodeled in 1875. Today it houses score of vendors selling Polish folk crafts. The tower at right is all that remains of the Gothic Town Hall, although the tower is Baroque in style. The actual Town Hall was demolished in 1846, although I'm not quite sure why.
