Győr Cathedral

The foundation for Győr Cathedral was laid in the early 11th century, at the time of St. István. It was destroyed by the Mongols in 1240 and rebuilt in Gothic style in 1257-67. The chapel housing the reliquary of St. László dates to the 15th century. After a fire destroyed two enormous towers, the cathedral was remodeled in the 17th century, and the Baroque interior dates to the time after the Ottoman occupation, when superb frescoes and altarpieces were added.
