We had visited Dubai for a week or so in 2006 (along with two days in Kuwait), and I think we really saw the best parts of it on that trip https://pbase.com/helenpb/dubai_pearl_of_the_gulf and in fact didn't really feel the need to return, but it was there, only a short drive from Abu Dhabi, so we decided to spend a couple of more days there.

We had planned to go to Sharjah, another of the Emirates close to Dubai, but in the end didn't as we just ran out of time (and some of the locals couldn't imagine why we even wanted to go there, sort of a working class city for people who commute to Dubai). Our hotel was in an inconvenient location for seeing the main sights again, so we seemed to spend a lot of our first day in shopping malls, which were quite spectacular. The second day we drove back out to Burj Al Arab before heading back to Abu Dhabi and our flight to Bahrain. All in all, it wasn't a particularly eventful or exciting stay in Dubai, although I enjoyed seeing what we did (but didn't take a whole lot of pictures!)
