Halemaumau is the circular pit seen on the right side of the image. It's located within the main Kilauea Cauldera. When Mark Twain was here Halemaumau was a molten pit of lava, and a very warm place! The current activity of the volcano is downslope of this location, and on this particular day the winds were very favorable and the air extremely clean and clear.
