This was the view looking straight up, shortly after "The Vortex" was captured over arctic Alaska. You're looking into the eye of an auroral corona during a significant geomagnetic storm. The rays are actually quite straight. The effect here results entirely from perspective -- similar to how one standing on railroad tracks will perceive them to converge in the distance, even though they continue to run parallel to one another.
