Left part of the pano: The GBH loosing its catch.

Right part of the pano: A Common Merganser family settling in for a rest.
A friend and I had been looking for the Common Merganser family. We spotted them upstream on the other side of the channel and we waited for them downstream at the narrowest part of the channel. However, they turned around and went back upstream. We then spotted the GBH upstream on our side of the channel and we decided to check it out.
When we got to the GBH, it had just caught a small fish, which it then lost again. All of a sudden as we were photographing the Heron, we spotted the Mergansers settling in for a rest on the tree trunk to the far right of the Heron. It appears that, unbeknown to us, they had crossed the channel and climbed on to the tree trunk whilst we were busy with the Heron.
