Ottawa West

This Pileated appeared oblivious to the three-four photographers clicking away a short distance from it. It just kept looking up. It then did fly to perch on another tree trunk a short distance away. There, it appeared frozen and continued its gaze upwards, again ignoring us shutterbugs only some 10 feet away. We were not able to determine the cause of its vexation, but assumed it to be an overhead predator.

This is incredible, Hank! It is so rare to be able to get this close. Your story is interesting and reminds me of the downies that freeze here when a Cooper's is hunting. I bet you were right thinking there was a predator.
