Note: the Barrow's is not common for our area; however, occasionally one overwinters along with the Common Goldeneyes. This one was a first for me. (See also my posting of yesterday by clicking "NEXT".)

Top image: Last of several underwater dunkings. I'm not sure if the purpose of the dunkings was to wash or to get warm. The air temperature was -18 degrees C ( 0 F), so the +1C to +3C degree water probably felt downright balmy.)


Instead of towels, a customary flap of the wings gets rid of the water.


Some more flapping and "Voila, the body is dry.


Now a head-shake and bath-time is finished.
