20100709 139 Least Sandpiper SERIES.jpg

Ottawa

Three images of THE Least Sandpiper. Yesterday I posted my first image of a Least Sandpiper. This first image was taken in early June. A few days ago, I came across a small flock of about ten Least Sandpipers foraging for food along The Ottawa Beach. They are reportedly the smallest of the Sandpipers in North America. They are quite tame and I was able to approach the small flock to within 4 - 5 meters before the whole flock would fly off in unison, in a zigzag fashion, only to land a short distance away and resume foraging. I suspect that these are an early group, on the way back to their Winter habitat.

I meant to say that the first image is quite magical. It goes beyond being a good crisp shot and becomes a superbly aesthetic image.

A terrific series of these little sandpipers. I love the way they take off, wheeling and circling before landing again and running down the shore.

Nice Series, Hank. I'll be different and go with the second, a good compromise between detail and getting the whole group.
