20100704 040 Leucistic Crow SERIES.jpg

Ottawa

Three images of a leucistic Crow. I first saw this Crow a few days ago. It was in flight and was being chased by several other Crows. It seemed to fly like a Crow, but didn't look at all like one as it had white wing tips, clearly visible in flight. I later spotted it again, having been led to it by the loud noise of several Crows. A fight was underway. The normal Crows were ganging up and trying to chase this odd Crow away. It gave as good as it got.

Top Image: The leucistic Crow in attack mode.

Taking a breather on a telephone cable. Note the tip of the tongue sticking out.

Hiding in a tree from the other Crows. Again, the tip of its tongue is sticking out the side of its
beak.

Thanks to Ted for the heads-up w.r.t. the correct I.D.;namely, "Leucistic Crow".

I am surprised that the other crows reject someone who is different. I thought only we did that.

It is tough to be different, whether a person or a crow! Looks like it is taking a toll on this bird given his tongue is always out. Nice observations and images! V

It probably won't survive long if the other crows are taking exception to it .... It looks like a young one. Very nice series again!

Excellent series Hank on this freak of nature! I've never seen a albino crow~!

Great shots, especially that first one. I was so intrigued I had to look this up and discovered that leucism in birds is a genetic disorder that results in an uneven distribution of pigment cells that give the bird patches of lighter color or white or can even result in an all over paler color, such as brown instead of black. Very interesting! BV!

Nice series of a strange bird. We have a strange crow with gray on it here that they think came on a ship from Asia. I have not seen it or a photo of it, but they definitely mention gray markings.
