The Historic Cannonball Bridge -- St. Francisville, Illinois
Originally constructed by the King Bridge Company in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1897, then bought by the railroad, dismantled, and moved to its present site in 1906 to serve as a railroad bridge over the Wabash River between Indiana and Illinois. Its center span was a swing bridge. When the railroad abandoned the line, the bridge was purchased by a Vincennes, Indiana farmer and today serves as a one lane toll bridge for automobile travel. The ties are planked with 2 inch running boards and rattle as you drive across.
Love these pics, takes me back to a much simpler but precious time n St F. I was born in the northern part of this small town in 1948. Mother never had to leave the house, just called Doc Snider & here I am still yet today. I love this little town & will probably call it home until Jesus calls me to my heavenly home. Until then, this is home. We don't have the ferry anymore, no gas station, no grocery store, no hardware store, no train station, no welding shop, no John Deere implement co., no tv sales & well I guess I could go on & on. Oh, did I mention no high school? I suppose that's the one I miss most of all. To all my old classmates & other school friends, I still have many fond memories & yes this is still home. I can honestly say I have a lot of love for my little town & the people who have called this place home & shared a part of their lives with me. God bless you all & don't forget "home". Jerry Scott
