Weed VV Processing

I am trying to get close the the images I used to get using Kodak HIE film.
I was not pleased with my first efforts. I contacted Vincent Versace and
he gave me a few tips I was able to use with this image. He also provided some
changes to how I am shooting. I will have to go back and try these. I think this
is better, but still have more work to do. I have been just experimenting in
the backyard as I did not want to go out to a prime location and then not like
what I was able to achieve. I think I am getting closer.

I am using a converted Canon 30D that I just bought. If you have any tips, or
hints, I'm open to suggestions. Compare this weed to the next one.

Nice strong image with a nice contrast between the ephemeral nature of the weed and the greater permanence of the trees. When you used HIE, you got a certain amout of flare or halation around the highlights, thanks to the lack of antihalation backing. Also you got a fairly strong grain. These two things were in addition to the black skies and white vegetation. I suspect that going digital still gives you the skies and white leaves, but there is a loss of that halation, which added so much. I'm wondering how to best use IR in your 30D. I have a hunch it would be worth trying tadditional filters on the camera (maybe to get a similar sort of flare), and to add some postproessing. The hard part of postprocessing is to avoid the cliches that are so easy to fall into when using Photoshop filters. Could put camera on tripod and make several images of the same scene, some IR, some color, some slightly different focus and then see what can happen when you combine two of them in Photoshop.

This is a great improvement. You might Pmail MarkVM. He does a lot of IR with a converted 30D.
