We have this useless area of lawn on the north side of the back yard. I've been wanting to plant some evergreen trees to add to the privacy on that side. The problem is, it's very shaded, and most conifers like sun. And obviously they have to be native. So our choices were limited. Hemlocks are very picky about their conditions. But on paper this should be a good spot for them. Very protected, mostly shady with a little sun, moist, well drained acidic soil. It was brutally hot the day we planted them (first on record 100 degree day in May), and digging a hole 5x the width of the container was exhausting. Did we do it right? Is this a good spot? Time will tell!
