Here's a collection of birds I've had the pleasure to photograph in and around my hometown of Sedona, Arizona. Sedona and the surrounding Verde Valley area provides an excellent birding habitat with several perennial creeks and rivers. These waterways include the Verde River, Oak Creek, lower Sycamore Creek, Wet Beaver Creek, and Clear Creek among others. They provide the lush riparian habitat that attracts a variety of birdlife including song birds, waterfowl, shorebirds and birds of prey. In addition to all this natural birding habitat, there are two nearby man-made habitats which probably attract even larger numbers of birds. The first is the Page Spring bubbling ponds - a fish rearing facility with several small ponds where one can find waterfowl and shorebirds galore in the winter months. The most recent is the Sedona Wetlands. This facility is a water reclamation area built in the spring of 2012 and contains a number of ponds with easy access. Because this area is so new, it's hard to predict what types of birds you'll expect to find. Already this fall, it has become an increasingly popular waterfowl haunt. Since, it's only three miles from my house, I'm really hoping this becomes a birding hotspot.
