Red-tail Hawk

Ottawa, Ontario. Canada.

Had an opportunity to photograph this Red-tail Hawk up close. I think it is a juvenile as the tail feathers are still brown in colour. The sun was coming in from the left side so I had to adjust -EV for the bright side and used the flash to compensate.

Juvenile hawks are more tame than their adult counterpart. Only a fast moving vehicle real close to it, made the hawk fly off its perch. Two people bicycling past it had no effect on its behaviour. Didn't mind me either.

Hi Gillian. Thanks for the comment and the heads up about the Ottawa Citizen :-) Here is the link for those who don't know what we're talking about.http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/features/birds/index.html#

Yes, juvenile hawks are easier to get close to. I went back a few times but no sign of the hawk.

Thanks Janet. I'm happy I worked at getting the exposure right. I post-processed the JPeg file but also have the RAW if I really want to tweak it some more.

What a fantastic shot! I saw this photo for the first time today in the Citizen's online gallery - sweet! I have yet to get a decent shot of a red-tailed hawk because they keep flying away from me whenever I approach in the car. I guess I have to go look for some juveniles...!
