Merlin

One of several merlins I had the pleasure of watching over the past few days at two different locations. The one above caught several small birds and watched as it plucked and ate its catch on open perches over a marsh area. One bird it could not catch was the kingfisher which eluded the merlins by diving into the water. At another location I watched bluejays mob a merlin, not giving it a moments rest. The merlin was intent on staying and did for some times before being driven away by the persistent and vocal bluejays.

Thanks Jaime for the kind words. I shoot mostly in aperture priority but will switch to shutter priority in certain lighting conditions where the shutter speed can fluctuate below a threshold for a sharp photo. As in this photo, I make sure to expose properly. Had this shot not been exposed properly, it would have been dark and noisy.

I don't recall the aperture used here but with a clean background would have gone for f/8. I was using a tripod that day but can't say for sure it was used in this shot but more than likely it was.

Superb picture, Golpic.
Your bird pictures have always amazed me.
I see you have been using a lot the 70-200 f/8 and the 400 f/5.6.
What are the basics of your technique? For instance, with the 400 f/5.6, what mode are you using? Priority to aperture? Which aperture used for this picture? f/5.6 or f/8? Did you use a flash (with better beamer or something? Are you using a tripod, or do you mostly shot handheld, maybe?

Thanks for showing us your pictures.
