In my youth I red "Treasure Island" and "The
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"
under the blankets, disobeying my parents orders to go to sleep.
I'm sure you have similar memories!
Stevenson spend final part of his life in Samoa. Samoans called him "Tusitala" ("Teller of Tales") He died on 3rd December 1894, at the age of only 44 and was buried at the summit of Mount Vaea (475m/1558'). The present Villa has an additional wing constructed in the period of German Samoa 1889-1914, when the Villa served as a residence of governor Wolfgang Solf. In 1992, the Villa was seriously damaged by hurricane Val. After its reconstruction, the R.L.Stevenson Museum was opened in the Villa. Unfortunately, with the exception of 3 chairs, the interior contains only replicas. From the grounds of the museum a path leads to the summit of Mount Vaea and the last resting place of Robert L. Stevenson. A magnificent view opens up from the summit at the Harbor of Apia and at several villages with their so typical Samoan Fales. |
