Chaco

Chaco Canyon, New Mexico

it is a long, bumpy drive from Farmington to Chaco Canyon, yet well worth the effort...here the Chaco culture, actually Ancestral Puebloans, was established about 1,000 years ago, lasting three centuries or so...this is the view from Una Vida back towards the entrance to the canyon...the visitor centre is visible, and behind to the right is Fajada Butte, until recently the location of the famed 'sun dagger', whereat the solstices and equinoxes were marked and celebrated by the ancient astronomers...recent settling of the rock slabs has ended the effect of the light on the pecked spirals

Nice capture of the scene from high on the cliff wall, David. Thanks for the BG information, even though an unfortunate turn of events. Further evidence that nothings lasts forever.

An arid landscape David. I wonder how the original people managed to feed themselves?

I really wanted to get to Chaco Canyon, but didn't have the time. After seeing this image I'm even more disappointed. Sad about the sun dagger. V
