The Registan was the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand of the Timurid dynasty.
Is was a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations and a place of public executions.
There are three medresses on the registan: The Ulug Beg Medresse (1417-1420),grandson Timur, the Tilya-Kori (1646-1660) and the Sher-Dor medresse (1619-1636).
The decoration of the Sher-Dor is not as refined as that on the Ulug Beg.
