Termite mounds

Barkly Tableland, NT Australia

These comparatively massive structures are built by the diminutive grass-feeding termite Nasutitermes triodiae which feed
predominately on the lussock grasses of the genus Triodea. Unfortunately in this are and many other places in Australia the
planting of the vigorous introduced Buffel grass has increased the temperature of the fires to such an extent that the once rich
communities are being replaced with a monoculture. These magnificent mounds and the communities that live amongst them are
threatened by our unhealthy addiction to beef.
