The Mertens Water Monitor is an active hunter of fish, frogs, small lizards and invertebrates. Although impacted by the arrival
of the Cane Toad in Kakadu, this species appears to have fared better than other Varanids, and can still be observed around
many of the rocky streams in and around the escarpment country of Kakadu.
This specimen was used to people and was reluctant to move as it was early in the morning.
This individual was a little over a metre in total length.
