Common Wombat, Vombatus ursinus

Cradle Valley, Tasmania, Australia

Cradle Valley in Tasmania is one of the best places in the world to see wombats. Although they are by nature agressively
solitary creatures you can often see a number of them within a relatively small area as they chew their way across the sub-alpine
grasslands of the valley. This female is contemplating the photographer over a mouthful of grass. She looks as if she has a bit of
a beer belly but it is actually a baby in the pouch. The pouch of a wombat opens backwards, so the baby sticks its head out from
between mum's back legs. These creature produce large, distinctive droppings with which they mark their territories
(see http://www.pbase.com/gehyra/image/38902120). Could this be the origin of the term "pull your head in!"?
