Cicada (Cyclochila australasiae)

Kanangra Boyd National Park, NSW Australia

This is almost certainly the loudest insect in Australia; at close range the sound produced by a male can be as high as 120 decibels,
and a chorus of these creatures in summer is so loud it can make a trip into the bush uncomfortable. They probably feel they have
to party hard as they probably spend their first seven years in a hole in the ground. Mating in this species can last for three hours.
Females are silent.
These animals are popular amongst small boys in south-east Australia where they are given names like Yellow Monday, Greengrocer,
Masked Devil, Chocolate Soldier and Blue Moon. These are all different colour forms of the one, very loud, species.
This cicada is about 65mm long.
