Trawsfynydd Artillery Range and Camp - Old Photos

From 1905 until 1959 a military camp existed at Bronaber near Trawsfynydd, with the nearby Cain Valley aquired as an artillery firing range. Parts of the range are still closed to the public due to the presence of live munitions.

Just found a post card of the camp dated May 1930 so my Father must have been training here before joining the BEF

I did my basic training with the 64th Training Regiment RA in 1954 stationed in Oswestry and we used to bring our 25 pounders here for practice. Great fun!

Hi, Many thanks for the information and photos about this site. I'm interested in it's WW1 existence because an Irish man named James Joseph Lalor was here in 1915 or so, as 'Conductor, Acting Ordnance Officer' and is also recorded as a 'Transport Warrant Officer class 2"'. He was later to be Capt QM with the Loyal Nth Lancs Regt. He had been a Conductor with the Indian Ordnance Dept before he came to Cork to work for University College Cork (UCC), of which I am University Curator. He returned to UCC in 1919. I am bringing my Father Edward "Ted" Carroll back to Trawsfynydd early November 2016 - He lived in the village in the 1940's as a 14 year old - He is now 86. His father Robert Carroll was at the Army Camp. Please call me if you have anything interesting. James 07980 30 20 73. My father, Sgt Norman Potts, was a regular soldier in the Royal Artillery, like his father before him and was stationed here for part of WW11. My mother got out of London during the blitz, being pregnant with me, and dad found her rooms in Gilfachwen farm house, which overlooked the camp from further up the mountain. I was born there in 1942. Mrs Roberts, the farmer's wife, helped deliver me. I was named after her. We were there until I was about four, and I visited Hugh and Maggie Roberts many times until I was in my twenties, then lost touch. I have nothing but happy memories of Wales and its lovely people. Happy days.

My father was stationed here in the second world war - i visit every year . His name wa Geoffrey unitt - his brother Wlater Ronald also got enlisted here who married a local lady Mair Jones.

Keith, excellent photos. My Great Grandfather, Francis James O'Neill was camp warden/caretaker at Bronaber and devoted over 50 years of his life to the Army. Thanks for all your trouble Keith, it was a pleasure to see the photos, even though Francis O'Neill wasn't in any of them!
