The different colours that can be seen on the altar frontal, pulpit fall and lectern ribbons correspond with the Seasons of the Church Calendar, Holy Days and other special days. The most common colours are, white, red, purple, green and black. White is used on our Lord’s Holy Days, such as Christmas, Easter, Ascension; Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Feasts of Saints that are not Martyrs; and the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. Red is the colour of the days of the Martyrs who shed their blood in testimony to Christ. This is also Whitsun’s colour – the colour of the tongues of fire. Purple is the colour of penance; used in the season of Advent, Lent and Rogation Days. Green is the colour of nature, used seven days after Epiphany and during the Trinity Season. Black is used on Good Friday and during services connected with death.
