Llyn Morwynion (Maidens' Lake), not to be confused with the lake of the same name near Llan Ffestiniog. The name came about according to legend when outlaws from the Harlech area raided lands to the east of the Rhinog range and used hidden passes like Bwlch Tyddiad or the Roman Steps as its better known, to steal cattle and the like. On a raid into Clwyd they kidnapped a few of the womenfolk. Outraged at this the men of Clwyd raised a gang to pursue them, they caught up with them in the Roman Steps and killed many of the bandits. They rescued the women and brought them back through the pass, however they had fallen in love with their captors, laden with grief and not wishing to return to Clwyd they threw themselves into the lake and drowned! :-(
