The "Roman Steps" pass through Bwlch Tyddiad, a high mountain pass between Trawsfynydd and Harlech on the coast. Its quite probable that the route was used in prehistoric times and by the Romans, but the steps apparently are medeival with their spacing and placing suggesting packhorse usage, probably to supply the English garrison posted to Harlech Castle.
