Ellen Owen

Trawsfynydd

Robin's mother, Ellen Owen (1838 - 1915) was a renowned herbalist. The "Old Man" (Artemisia abrotanum) that she used for various remedies still grows in my grandmother's garden. Probably one of her less savory cures was to boil a certain red-spotted slug, this concoction then had to be consumed immediately, a kill or cure solution no doubt!

Interesting Mairead. I haven't noted it yet, but children used to come regularly to the smithy to dip their hands in the water bucket which was used for cooling and this would also cure warts in about a fortnight!

She looks like a wise old lady.
Here it's said to be a cure for warts if you rub a slug onto it, then stick the slug on the thorn of a gooseberry bush.
After nine days the wart will have withered away. It worked for my son, although we spared the slug and let it go upon its merry way.
