Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is a non-native species that can spread quickly once established. There is not a lot at the FWG, though we let a few plants remain because it is the larval food source for black swallowtail butterflies. It is also devoured by the parsnip webworm who can do a stellar job of control, if allowed. The larvae of the moth live communally in the flowerheads of the plant and as can be seen, do considerable damage. They should be encouraged as a biocontrol method rather than widespread spraying of chemicals which kill off many other plant species too.
