Magnolia seeds

There are two large magnolias trees at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, planted many years before we took over the site. I have no idea which variety of magnolia they are. The flowers attract a lot of insects in spring, and the seeds, in autumn, are gathered by the squirrels, though they don't appear to be a top favourite food.
