Red elderberry (Sambucus pubens)

Also called red-berried elder. This is a native shrub which flowers early in spring, one of the first of our native shrubs to do so. It later produces clusters of fruit which is quickly eaten by birds and squirrels. It does well in shaded conditions. This one is growing under the canopy of the ash woods.
