Gall on Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis)

This gall is made by the midge, Schizomyia impatientis, one of the Cecidomyiid gall midges. They look like distorted flower buds, which in fact, is what they are. The midge lays its eggs in the flower buds which then form a gall around the larva.
