I was a corpsman assigned to 1st med battalion 1st Mar. Div. We boarded the Manitowoc in 1972 to conduct games out of San Diego. I think the amphibious boats were part of our games as I was on one. We boarded the amphibs by climbing down cargo nets. I may be wrong but maybe a crew member will remember. The crew was pissed because they had just returned from a west PAC tour and we boarded when they returned stateside.
