The 'dropwindsonde' is a compact weather instrument
dropped by aircraft over oceans,
or into storms to collect data.
The one shown in the picutre
is called the AVAPS,
which the most current generation of dropwindsonges
and includes GPS, or satellite-connected positioning capability.
