So many places to see following the Silk Road.
With my group of French friends I have arrived in China!
Here I am in Kashghar.
Situated at a junction of routes. The valley of the Oxus,
Khokand and Samarkand, Almati, Aksu, and Khotan,
the last two leading from China and India,
Kashghar has been noted from very early times as a political and commercial centre.
The Kashghar oasis is where both the northern and southern routes from China
around the Taklamakan Desert converge.
We have decided to visit Afâq Khoja's mausoleum
which is considered the holiest Muslim site in Xinjiang.
It is located in Haohan Village, a north eastern suburb, some 5 km from the city centre of Kashghar.
First built ca. 1640, initially as Muhammad Yusufs tomb,
the beautiful tiled mausoleum contains the tombs of five generations
of the Afâqi family,
providing resting places for its 72 members, both men and women.
I'm not afraid of tombs,
but I'm relieved there isn't also a place provided for little travelling bears here...
