Frimpong in Belfast & Northern Ireland - by Christel
Belfast is a city that was formed from a settlement on the mouth of the river Lagan and its tributary, the Farset.
The history of Belfast as a settlement goes back to the Bronze Age, but its status as a major urban centre dates to the 18th century.
Belfast today is the capital of Northern Ireland.
Belfast was, throughout its modern history, a major commercial and industrial centre. It suffered in the late 20th century from a decline in its traditional industries, particularly shipbuilding. The city's history has been marked by violent political conflict which has caused many parts of the city to be split into 'Catholic' and 'Protestant' areas. In recent years, ever since the signing of the Good Friday agreement, the further development of the peace process has meant that the city has been peaceful and major redevelopment has occurred, especially the inner-city and dock areas.
In addition there has been a cultural renewal in the city, with annual visual and performing arts festivals, a thriving university community, beautiful Botanic Gardens, a grand opera house, a wonderful auditorium on the waterfront, lots of fine shops, and for those who are interested in social history it is the birthplace of the famous ship the Titanic.
The Samson and Goliath landmark gantry cranes of the Harland and Wolff shipbuilders have become icons of the city.
There are many Edwardian and Victorian buildings in fine repair in Belfast, and those, coupled with more recent architectural development, along with its riverside situation and its parks (of which there are over forty)and gardens, bestow a certain character on a city which deserves to be acclaimed as a most attractive place to visit.
In Belfast at last!
