Sony Alpha A6000

Test mirrorless Sony A6000 ILCE-6000

Sony Alpha A6000 - An NEX by any other name or the NEX(t) Generation
Back in 2010 when Sony released the original NEX-3, NEX-5 and later Sony NEX-3n https://pbase.com/fotostefan/sony_nex3n the NEX lineup was unlike anything else on the market. Though Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras had been around since 2008, the NEX line was a more modern twist on the mirrorless concept. Though Sony has since abandoned the NEX designation, the Sony A6000 is an amalgamation of all of the best ideas of the NEX generation. It has a 24 Megapixel APS-C sensor, 1080p video up to 50p / 60p, built-in Wifi with NFC and support for downloadable apps (you have to go into the PlayMemories Store via the camera to get them and pay for them from $4.99, to $9.99), along with a good viewfinder, tilting screen and decent set of controls. The A6000 has a thin body, powerful processor, advanced APS-C sensor, one of the better electronic viewfinders I've seen (so far), and loads of control.
If you rely on manual focus and exposure you have a host of options at your disposal, with focus peaking, magnification, and zebra striping all available—even while recording video.
The Sony Alpha A6000 is a confident mid-range camera that's great for shooting action - indeed it a good competitor to a DSLR. If you want a camera that's confident with moving subjects, the A6000 is a good choice. It boasts confident AF tracking across the frame which even works at the fastest burst speed of 11fps, and the buffer is sufficiently large to capture around five seconds worth of action at this speed. But then, after the 5 seconds you wait around another 10 seconds until the A6000 finish transfer images to memory card (SDHC, SDXC, or Sony Stick PRO Duo).
Notable absences, especially for video shooters: there's no mic jack, no headphone jack, no audio level control—heck, no audio level display, for others Sony A6000 doesn't have a touchscreen interface and it's tilt only on 2 direction at 90/45 degrees and not enough for selfie :-)
