As long as I have a bird still long enough, I can get a fine image with my Nikkor 70-300 VR/Sigma 1.4x TC combination. Where I find it lacking is when I have to respond quickly to catch a pose. The lens with TC just reacts too slowly for that kind of situation. Otherwise, the lens/TC works pretty well. It has been cropped just a bit.
