Beautiful, But Beware!

The tall plant, called Giant Hogweed, with beautiful flowers if found in the wooded areas of Alton Baker park. It is becoming quite common throughout our area. I didn't realize how dangerous it can be. Check the link below and check out all eight photos. Just clink on the right arrow for the next photo.
Note this report by CBS - "Giant hogweed - a dangerous, invasive weed - recently began spreading across New York, sparking fear and warnings from the state's Department of Environmental Conservation. They say the plant can burn, scar, and even blind you - but what exactly is it and how can you avoid it? Keep clicking to get the scoop on this toxic plant..." http://tinyurl.com/pf2azqz)
Queen Anne's Lace is similar to Giant Hogweed, though it does not grow as tall. It is also called Wild Carrot. But one can get burns on the skin from it too! See - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daucus_carota
Also somilar to Giant Hogweed is Poison Hemlock. It is acutely toxic to people and animals. The flower looks much like both Giant Hogweed and Queen Anne's Lace. For photos, see - http://tinyurl.com/mqgomqa All three are found in the Pacific Northwest.
So there you have it, three similar plants! Whichever one it is, it is a noxious weed!

You sure took a great photo of it! It must be nasty stuff!

Good info! I didn't know that about Queen Anne's Lace. I pulled a ton of it out of our field as it started becoming invasive.

Beautiful image, Vern. I never knew how dangerous it can be. Hope they are finding ways of controlling it. V

Wow! That gets enormous! And kind of scary to know you can go blind from it.

We have this in the UK, the delicate tracery belies its ability to cause pain. Well isolated from the background.

For a noxious weed it's very pretty.

It also looks like poison hemlock except for the leaves, which is what I though it was when I saw the thumbnail. A most interesting pest. Vote.

Jean D31-May-2014 16:53
Although potentially very hazardous, a fine looking plant, from a distance..
Sam Rua31-May-2014 16:45
Nice capture of this beautiful hazard, Vern. And people think I'm crazy for living around poisonous animals and prickly cactus...

Such a beautiful photo of this dangerous plant! Gorgeous light and color. Thanks for the warning. V

It does look like Queen Anne's Lace but I had never heard of it before. Another instance of something being introduced from another country that needs irradiation. This is what happens when a plant or animal somehow gets through customs and starts invading an area they are not native to. The Asian carp is another example, it is taking over many of the rivers and streams in the east and Midwest and there seems no stopping it.

We have a lot of the smaller version here, which isn't harmful to touch, but is if you eat it.

Love the composition and color in this. We have the same plant here in Finland... V
Paul Milholland31-May-2014 06:19
You'd think something that dangerous would be color-coded red by Mother Nature. Yikes!
