Downy Woodpecker!

I finally got to see a Downy Woodpecker, this one at Delta Ponds. What a treat!
But I had a senior moment and forget to change shutter speeds when I mounted a 80-400 VR on my D200.
As a result of slow speeds, a lot of the images just were not any good.
I managed to salvage a few. This is one, not the sharpest, but I am still thrilled.

It is always a thrill to get your first shot of a particular bird

Congrats on your capture! I have several hairys and downys coming to the feeders and see them every where...I never would of thought you had not seen one. They are very cute. If you haven't read it, "The Owl and the Woodpecker" is a very interesting book.

pretty Bird good shot

Woodpeckers have always eluded me, this is quite arty and refreshingly different from the technically perfect shots of birds most strive for.
Martin Lamoon06-Mar-2012 19:51
Perfect, a fantastic picture and capture. V
Rebecca Leberman 06-Mar-2012 19:50
Cute little buggers aren't they!

Don't feel bad - we all have moments like that when we forget what all the little dials on the camera are for:) The number of times I have done exactly that are too many to count. That said, the softness of this does not impair the shot in any way. It is a well done contextual shot.

He's a real beauty Vern!!! Are downies not common in your neck 'o the woods? We get a lot of them at our feeders. :)

How exciting!

Very sweet, Vern. That is so exciting to "catch" a new bird with the camera! We have a pair that are regulars at our suet feeder as well. And also a pair of Nuttalls Woodpeckers. They are so fun to watch - and they usually call out when they arrive. ;)
Jack Hoying06-Mar-2012 04:23
Good find Vern. We have at least one of these within 10' of our back door during daytime. They love the suet feeder Brenda has out.
Greg W06-Mar-2012 04:10
Hey Vern, It is always fun seeing a new bird, and you caught it in a nice spot of the branches. Nice bright and clear colors too! They sure are pretty and fast too!
Chris Cochems 06-Mar-2012 04:08
Nice one, Vern.
