Had a nice conversation with this surveyor and his partner. The instrument is a Leica, a very expensive piece of equipment. He said it cost about as much as the pickup they were driving, no doubt some $40,000. What it does is amazing, figuring everything from geographic location, to elevation, topography, and more than I remember. They were using it for tracking a stream flow. Back in the 'old days' a survey crew for a job like this would have been six people. When the calculator came out, the crew dropped to four and now they work in pairs. Amazing technology, and all I knew about was their great cameras.
