From the archives at Oregon Aviation Historical Society

This old print, probably from 1928 or 1929, shows the plane christened "On to Oregon" used in an attempt by the Rankin brothers to set a mid-air refueling endurance record. The plane was a Stinson "Detroiter" monoplane powered by a 300-horsepower Pratt &Whitney Wasp Jr. engine. One of the Rankin brothers was Dudley, my wife, Carol's grandfather on her father's side.

My photo was made off of a print in the archives of the Oregon Aviation Historical Society, who has perhaps the largest collection of Tex Rankin memorabilia anywhere in the country.

In flight engine servicing!!!!! Sure glad I didn't have to do it!

That's a great piece of American / Family history. The engines in these endurance planes had to be serviced during the flight. They would build a catwalk (visible along the sides of the engine) so the mechanic could make his way to the engine to add oil, etc.
