Pretty Petals

The Weaver

Singapore Zoo

Think and imagine yourself to be this green insect. With two extra long `arms' stretch out weaving the web. As he works on building his `nest'......what was he thinking and how he felt being almost a small invisible creature to humans. And where did I find this little fellow of all the places in the world?.....

Below is the image before crop:

I have never in all my arachnid fearfilled days seen such a spider. What an incredible animal.
Cropped is better because it's nearer!

This is interesting Tricia - Your cropped image looks visually stronger because there are less distractions in the background, but it has also excluded much of the spider's web which I feel is such an integral expression of the spider's character. In the original, we could see the web stretching out in triangular shapes that reinforce the spider's geometric shape, and the reach of his web indicates how huge his kingdom and territory is - and he sits right in the middle of it, powerful and in command. Pros always tells us to shoot it right the first time, and if we didn't, cropping can save an image. But in my opinion, unfortunately something good has been lost in this crop - a sacrifice in its expression. Maybe if there had been detail in the white patches, "burning" in post-processing could have darkened it, leaving out the need to crop! It's a tough call! But this spider is so bizarre-looking that both versions are fascinating as they are!

Wow...that's a fascinating looking spider. Excellent details and colors, Tricia. V.

Nice crop, Trica. For the last 35 years, I've been telling my students: "As ye crop, ye shall reap!" And yes, it looks more menacing hanging from the top of the frame than it did before. Cropping is not only an aesthetic decision. It can change meaning as well. We get two chances to crop our images -- in the viewfinder of the camera, and later when we post process it in the computer. Not only can we eliminate distractions, as you did to those gaps of white sky that were previously at the top of your frame, but we can change the entire mood of an image. In this case, you leave the viewer no escape. The weaver works its way towards us without a sky at the top. Much, much stronger.

This is the rear view of the female Hasselt's Spiny Spider :-)
Small though she may be, but she certainly caught your attention and she must have been thinking... "How come these people just can't leave me alone, I'm waiting for my meal to show up!"

Great macro, Flowsnow. Great detail and wonderful comp.
Phil Douglis26-May-2007 18:25
A fascinating and incongruous image, Tricia -- which you can make even stronger by cropping from the top to remove those white pockets that draw the eye away from the spider. By cropping it, the spider will hang from the top of the image as well, and become even more threatening. Try it and see if you like it.

Glad that you guys took a liking to this `thing'....Emmii imagined it to be Spiderman and I am glad my hunch was correct it was a spider. Like some I have never seen a spider like that before triangular in shape......almost resembling an alien. LOL
