About three-fourths of the island of Maui is shown in this panorama. Taken from the top of Haleakala Crater, the entire West Maui Mountains and Iao Valley are hidden under their normal cloud cover. In the distance at upper left is the island of Lanai. The major city of Kahului sits at the right side of the island.
It is easy to see that present-day Maui originated as two islands separated by a channel of the same width as that separating Maui from Lanai and Molokai.
