Very nice photos, Dennis! I lived in Constance, Ky, just down the road from the ferry and worked at the WNOP 740AM (The Jazz Ark) transmitter site was in the nature preserve in Delhi, and was manned from sunrise to sunset. I took the ferry as often as possible and have pics I took of "Little Boone" and "Boone No. 7" in 1980. BC

i grew up just down the rd on the kentucky side from the ferry these pics take me back to my child hood...just love the photos....

Awesome pictures. I served in the US Coast Guard in Cincinnati in the late 70's. Was very familiar with the Ferry and crossed the river on it many times. Your presentation brings back many memories. Thanks and very nice job!

I was raised close by, even spent a summer working on the ferry back in the 70s. I came accross this sight while looking for info about an old house I remember as a small child. It set off to the side / behind the red barn it seems it was 2 or 3 story brock very very old 1800s? it was all but fallen over at that time. Someone finally did knock it down.. Does anyone remember this old house?? It a child hood memory Id love to see an old picture. I remember hearing there was tunnel leading to the river where slaves were taken in and out but I dont know it thats true.

Went down to the ferry this afternoon to see the flood stage. Old # 7 was working. The fellow next to me said # 7 must be 50 years old. I said , I've been married 55 years and I rode it when I was a kid. When I got home I looked it up, built in 1935. You need to post that in large letters.

I rode the Anderson Ferry once, several years ago. I now live in Washington and occasionally ride the ferries across Puget Sound. While I much prefer the scenery of Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountain backdrop to Cincinnati's west side, the nostalgia of Anderson Ferry is unmatched. The "feel" of riding Anderson Ferry reminds me of going fishing with my grandpa in rural Ohio in the early '80s on old wooden docks or in his rowboat. Preserve Anderson Ferry in its current form, because it really is a treasure! And thanks for the pictures.

Looking for info about Henry A. Ward a River boat Pilot back in 50's and early 60's..... may have worked Anderson Ferry and sure he worked Warsaw Ferry from Warsaw, KY. I am a children's book author and illustrator. I just visited a school in Cincinnati and they took me back to the airport on your enchanting ferry. I wanted to show my husband and friends, and I'm so glad I found your site and these gorgeous photos. Thank you for sharing! I ride "The Whatcom Chief" to our home on a little island in the San Juan's, in the state of Washington. You would love our ferry if you ever "go west." The Anderson Ferry is a real national treasure, though. So happy I got to experience it.

Gosh, I second what everyone else has posted. Such memories. We used to ride the ferry as kids to visit my mother's family (Foltz, Kottmyer) and crossing on the ferry was the absolute highlight of the whole trip down from Indianapolis. Just thinking about it stirs so many memories. I think I can still smell the river and feel the wind. Ahh, the rocking of the ferry in the current. I loved the pictures i grew up in ludlow, my father was Jim Flowers he passed away in 2005 when i was a kid we would park along the river and watch the ferry and other boats,and barges . Also was told that their might be a family connection,My fathers mother's maiden name was Anna Mae Anderson any info would we be greatly appreciated about the Anderson's I believe her father was a George Washington Anderson.

GREAT pictures. I was brought up in Newport during the '30s and as a "runny nosed kid" I could identify most of the steam boats by the sound of their whistles. I remember the Sunday moringing that the G. W. McBride khit the L&N Railroad bridge and sank. We boated along the Ohio for most of my adult life and times were god. I have left many friends along the river, too many to mention but these are good memories and that your pictures have helped me to remember clearly.

Oh, my; what memories overcame me as I found this web site. From the late 1940's to the mid sixties, my father and I crossed the mighty river twice a year as he brought me from my care givers in North Vernon, Indiana to his kindred in Boone County Kentucky. I remember the excitement as we would wait on the Hoosier side for the ferry. I still have in memory the familiar "bump" as we loaded onto the ferry. While crossing over the fresh crisp air whirled around and caught our air and breath. When we landed on the Kentucky side, I knew it was only a few miles to "home", my paternal grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, Hopeful Lutheran Church in Florence and Mother Tanner's cherry pie. What bittersweet memories have taken me aback this day. Now, if I can get back to work without showing the emotion I feel right this moment and time...well...Thank you, Gin-Nie Tanner Smith, High Point NC (too far away).

I'm 67 now but I remember crossing on the ferry with my bicycle when I was 10 with my buddies to go to the airport. I paid 10 cents to ride the ferry. Boone no. 7

Hello Family Anderson. This is Charles E. Kottmyer, Great Grandson of Henry Kottmyer. I have been serving in the US Army for 23 years and recently returned from a second tour in Iraq. My father Bud used to work on the ferry when Richard Kottmyer operated the ferries in the 70's. I used to ride back and forth on Boone 7 when I was a kid when my father would work the weekends. I am currently stationed at MA. Several years ago between deployments I stopped at the ferry to see MR Anderson. I left a combat patch for him and wanted to make sure he received it. I lived in Anderson Ferry for 21 years. As kids we used to put a rock on our fishing lines on the edge of the Ferry Boat. when the Ferry was way out we would hold our fishing line, it was out farther then we could cast.

I lived in Cincinnati, on Hillside Ave. for eighteen years. Anderson Ferry Rd. was right on our backyard. The windows on our house faced the Ohio River. Getting up every morning and watching the ferry was never the same as the day before; it was like watching a painting in motion. I now live in Wisconsin and I'm home sick for the view of the Ohio River & the Anderson Ferries.

I am 80 years old, born in Newport , Ky. Spent 40 years working for the old Ohio River Co,(ORCO), Chotin Transportation, and Mid-South Towing Co. Working in Mgt. Left No. Ky., in 1970 for New Orleans. Enjoyed the Anberson Ferry and the other river shots You captured the true feeling of the "work on the river" . Doing it in black and white is wonderful.
