Often times blurring the background will leave a "halo" around the subject.
To minimize, try this quick fix
1. Open image and create a duplicate image to retouch. Close the original for safekeeping.
2. Duplicate the background layer
3. Apply gaussian blur to the new layer
4. Add layer mask to the blurred layer and reveal the sharp subject with a black brush
Note that the blurred subject becomes visible as a halo.
5. Select the image on the blurred layer and use the Smudge tool to gently
push the halo into the mask area.
The image to the left (1) is the original with obvious background detail.
The right image shows the image with blurred background layer on the left (2) and
the area to the right (3) shows how the smudge tool can easily hide the halo effect.
