This jail cell was where the very bad criminals were sent, often to die. Entry was down a shaft on a steep ladder inside the jail building, then laterally through a tunnel about 30 feet to this pit. Then down a circular stairway to the bottom. There were no sanitary facilities and the pit is said to hold up to 20 prisoners. It was about 3 or 4 feet wide and 20 feet long.
