Getting There

It took most part of the day just to get to the camp. We had strict limit on luggage weight of 35lbs per person, no ifs, ands and buts. Half the group went to a different airport, our half went to the airport at Puerto Montt. The chartered plane had room for 8 passengers, we had 9. So guide Pete flew in on a later flight. We landed at a fishing town of Chaiten to have lunch - the simplest yet the freshest and most delicious fish I had. We then rode in three vans to get to our BioBio camp by Rio Futaleufu - about three and half hours of bumpy and dusty ride.

Chaiten Update: In March 2008, a long dormant volcano erupted very close to the town of Chaiten. While all the people were evacuated safely, the town itself was ruined. In early 2009, the Chilean government decided that it was too dangerous to rebuild the town of Chaiten. The once tranquil village in these photos no longer exists. Bio Bio now brings their Futaleufu visitors in from Bariloche instead.
